Cement mats. The world of hydraulic tile
From June 28 to September 16, 2018 /
Inauguration: Thursday, June 28, at 7:30 p.m.
Within the wide range of arts applied to architecture throughout Modernism, the hydraulic tile is one of the least known. Probably due to the fact that it is an object designed to be stepped on, this type of decoration has meant that its nature has hardly been studied and that its conservation or safeguarding is still neglected today when an old building is restored.
Despite this, its presence gives spaces a durable, resistant, hygienic and beautiful solution. In Catalonia, renowned artists and architects such as Josep Pascó, Alexandre de Riquer, Lluís Domènech i Montaner, Josep Puig i Cadafalch, among others, designed tiles. Its rapid acceptance turned this pavement into lively cement carpets, an element closely linked to the development of the ornamentation of modernist architecture that goes beyond the limits of this style.
